Interference paintings employs a form of halftone, allowing light and dark to mix (‘interfere’) in the air between the painting and the viewer’s eye, so the farther away you are the clearer you see it —essentially doing for tonal value what pointillism does for colour. A large part of the pleasure consists in seeing how easily the image falls apart if you come too close.
